Beginnings 1

320 cm x 140 cm, acrylic on linen

The canvas arrived on Tuesday and I began work on Wednesday. I had planned to post some initial photos of the blank canvas but it was almost impossible to photograph as it reaches wall to wall in my studio and I couldn’t stand far enough away!

I’ve been working on the first few layers of acrylic, constructing the overall composition and tone of the piece. I can’t wait to switch to oils and begin working the full colours into the different areas. I’ve been working in only three colours so far – burnt umber, mars black, and titanium white and have been using gel medium in certain areas to add some textural elements. I also started using Golden’s Acrylic Glazing Liquid. It really helped smoothing out the acrylic paint and stopped it drying too quickly.

i am a beginner in oil paintings and i found these pieces of cotton paper like in a pad at walmart and the back seems to be lined with a canvas of sorts,,,they’re smallish in size and i paid about 4 dollars for the whole pad ,,,it has ten sheets –i chose this pad because i’m very new with oils and really don’t know how to create a figure or compose a painting bc i’ve ,only until last week, have sketched with water color pencils,,i’m having fun teaching myself but picked up a few pointers from your website like starting with a base of acrylics and how to thin the paints with less abrasive turpentine than one in home depot,,,like i said ,i’m nervous about creating a piece but actually have three working at same time— i’d love to share some work with you when i’m done and maybe you can give me some pointers as i dont have money for a class…i’m a pretty good sketch artist and have been in 3 shows so far and i even sketched a few caracatures for friends and family,,thanks ,,im mpatrick or mike p
